Senior Ecologist – Ornithology
About the Role
An established planning and environmental consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist with a focus on Ornithology to join its growing Ecology team in Galway, Cork or Dublin, with hybrid working available.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious ecology professional to work on complex projects across renewable energy, transport, water, infrastructure and private sector developments throughout Ireland and the UK.
The role combines technical ecology, project management, survey coordination, client advisory work and team leadership, with a strong focus on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and EU Habitats Directive assessments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead ecological and ornithological projects from inception through to completion.
- Manage project scope, budgets, invoicing, resources and delivery against deadlines.
- Design and coordinate ecological and ornithological survey programmes.
- Prepare and oversee high-quality impact assessments, technical reports and supporting documentation.
- Provide strategic ecological advice to clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ensure compliance with relevant planning, environmental and conservation legislation.
- Mentor and support junior ecologists, ornithologists and sub-consultants.
- Coordinate workloads across project teams and ensure efficient resource allocation.
- Build and maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships.
- Contribute to business development, fee proposals and securing new project opportunities.
About You
- Third-level qualification in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years’ post-graduate experience in ecology or environmental consultancy.
- Strong experience in EIA and EU Habitats Directive assessments.
- Excellent ecological knowledge and practical ornithological field skills.
- Strong understanding of avian ecology and the conservation status of bird species in Ireland and the UK.
- Good knowledge of relevant planning systems and environmental assessment processes.
- Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and workloads.
- Experience mentoring junior team members and coordinating specialist teams.
- Strong organisational and project management abilities.
- Full driving licence.
