Principal Engineer – Water

About the Role
A leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Principal Engineer – Water to join its Sustainable Infrastructure team.
This opportunity is suited to a Chartered Engineer or engineer working towards Chartership with at least 12 years’ experience in civil engineering. You will lead the planning and design of drainage and water infrastructure projects across highways, active travel, greenways, renewable energy and urban development.
The role offers significant responsibility for project delivery, client management and multidisciplinary coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of drainage designs for infrastructure, renewable energy and urban development projects.
- Design drainage networks, attenuation systems, ponds and SuDS.
- Design potable water and wastewater networks and pump stations.
- Lead hydrological and flood risk assessments.
- Prepare technical reports supporting drainage, hydrology and environmental assessments.
- Use relevant drainage and modelling software such as InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow or Autodesk Storm and Sewer.
- Coordinate CAD documentation with technicians.
- Collaborate with engineers, ecologists and environmental specialists.
- Mentor and supervise junior engineering staff.
- Prepare technical reports, tenders and proposals.
- Attend client, site and stakeholder meetings.
- Manage project delivery against agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards.
- Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance, Health & Safety and relevant legislation.
Requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum 12 years’ postgraduate civil engineering experience.
- Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards Chartership.
- Strong experience designing highway drainage systems and SuDS.
- Experience with potable water, wastewater networks and pump stations is advantageous.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D desirable.
- Strong understanding of civil design software.
- Consulting engineering experience.
- Excellent communication, organisational, analytical and leadership skills.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage complex tasks.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Full driving licence and willingness to travel.
